Slate Roofing prices in Melbourne
This page sets no price band: no government source states what slate roofing costs, and a figure from a sales page would be the seller's number, not yours. It shows where Victoria's rules attach to a job's value, and what to ask before a quote is accepted.

| In Victoria, domestic building work is work associated with the construction, renovation, improvement or maintenance of a home. Where the cost of the work is more than A$10,000 the parties must enter a major domestic building contract, and the builder must be registered under the Building Act 1993 to enter one; from A$20,000 the work must be covered by domestic building insurance. The Building and Plumbing Commission's class list has no class named for roof slating, so the question for any quote is which registration the work is done under.About slate roof replacement and re-slating | over A$10,000 | Building and Plumbing Commission, domestic building work · read |
| A Victorian council's heritage sheet says that under clause 43.01 of the Planning Scheme a planning permit is not required for works, repairs and routine maintenance that do not change the appearance of the heritage place, if carried out to the same details, specifications and materials as existing. City of Melbourne says the same for routine repairs that replace like for like without changing the appearance or significance of the place.About slate roof repairs | a property in a Heritage Overlay | City of Greater Geelong, Heritage Information Sheet: Repairs (Authentic Heritage Services, July 2023) · read City of Melbourne, Heritage Owner's Guide: Frequently asked questions · read |
| The same sheet says that where existing original or significant roof cladding requires complete replacement, a permit is generally required. | The council sheet says the battening and nailing system and the proposed materials for flashings and valleys should be documented as part of an application. This fills in the enquiry form below; nothing is sent until you submit it. Your details are handled under this site's Privacy Policy.
This lists each source's own lines as read; it is not legal advice, and it sets no price. The value that counts is the value of the work, including materials, labour and GST.
What changes a quote
Whether the existing slates can be reused comes first: a Victorian council's heritage sheet says salvaged slate should be reinstated where necessary, so the split between old and new slates changes the job. Access comes second, because a roof that needs scaffold beside a street needs a council permit for it. Whether the roof is in a Heritage Overlay comes third, because replacing original cladding generally needs a permit.
Lines a government body sets
The checker below lists each rule with its source and read date. Over A$10,000 the contract and registration lines apply; from A$20,000 domestic building insurance applies. It lists the street-occupation and scaffold permit lines of City of Melbourne and City of Port Phillip as those councils state them, and no other council fee.
