Slate Roofing in Melbourne

Slate roofing on a home is domestic building work in Victoria, and once the cost is more than A$10,000 a major domestic building contract is required and the builder must be registered. The Building and Plumbing Commission's class list has no class named for roof slating, so the useful question for any quote is which registration the work is done under.

What slate roofing in Melbourne actually involves

Domestic building work is work associated with the construction, renovation, improvement, or maintenance of a home. There are 30 registration classes of domestic building work. Where the cost of the work is more than A$10,000, the Commission says the parties must enter a major domestic building contract, and that a builder must not enter one unless registered as a building practitioner under the Building Act 1993. From A$20,000 the work must be covered by domestic building insurance.

Which registration

The Commission's list of classes names a roof class "limited to roof tiling" and none for roof slating. Whether the roof tiling class covers slate is not something its pages say, so this page names no class: ask whoever quotes. Roof plumbing, which covers gutters and flashings, is a separate regime this page does not cover.

Ask the provider which registration the work is done under, and what the quote assumes about the existing battens, nails and flashings.
