Slate Roofing in Abbotsford
The City of Yarra's report on its heritage precincts lists slate among the roof claddings that the HO313 Charles Street Precinct, Abbotsford citation identifies as contributory. If your roof is in a heritage overlay, a permit is normally required for most works, so ask the council first.

Permits and City of Yarra rules
Whether a roof job here needs a planning permit is for the council to confirm: repairs to the same details, specifications and materials as existing need none in a Heritage Overlay, while complete replacement of original or significant roof cladding generally does.

Slate Roofing around Abbotsford
For the HO313 Charles Street Precinct, Abbotsford, the report lists: "Corrugated iron roof cladding, some Marseilles pattern terra-cotta tiles (Edwardian-era), with some slate roofing;" The line is from the City of Yarra's Incorporated Plan methodology report, dated July 2014; it describes what the precinct's citation identifies as contributory, not what any house has, and whether the report is the plan now in force is not something this site can say. It does not say that any particular house is inside the precinct or has a slate roof.
Here the report says some slate roofing, beside corrugated iron and Marseilles pattern tiles, so slate is a minority in the precinct as the report describes it. Ask the City of Yarra whether the property is in the precinct before slates are stripped.
